Elmer Hamilton Hamer, born on Christmas Day 1946, was the fourth of six children from the union of the Reverend James H. Hamer and Mrs. Irma L. (Washington) Hamer. Elmer graduated from the High School of Commerce in 1964. After high school he worked at the Western Mass. Electric Co. Additionally, he served with the Future Business Leaders of America inspiring youth to achieve success. Thereafter, he served his country for over twenty years in the U.S. Army's Transportation Dept. , achieving the rank of SFC with an honorable discharge. After retiring from the Army, he drove a PVTA community bus to assist disabled individuals. Elmer was a lifetime member of the Retired Black Veterans Association. He is survived by his wife Ann P. (Bosworth) Hamer; four children Crystal Hamer of Bloomfield, CT, Ty Hamer of Chicopee, MA, Elmer Hamer Jr. and Nathaniel Hamer both of Suffolk, England; his siblings MSG James H. Hamer Jr. (US Army Retired) of Temple, TX, Dr. Norvell Jackson of Virginia Beach, VA and Miki A. Wynder of Amherst, MA; brothers-in-law Lewis V.A. Jackson III, Calvin M. Wynder Sr., Tim Bosworth and Barry Bosworth; sisters-in-law Janet Bosworth, Ellen Bosworth, Allison Dean and Janice Bosworth as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends too numerous to mention. He was predeceased by his parents, and sister Dr. Dorothy L. Denniston and brother Richard I. Hamer. A Celebration of Life service will be held at Noon on Thursday at Wesley United Methodist Church, 741 State Street.
