Obituary

Anna C. Steely, recently of Enfield, CT, and formerly of West Milford, NJ, and Manchester, CT, passed away at Baystate Medical Center, Springfield, MA, on January 11th, 2023, her 91st birthday, after saying loving good-byes to all her children and their families in the preceding days.

Anna was born in Holyoke, MA, the youngest of seven children of Konstanty and Anna Hrycay (Ficalowicz).  She was predeceased by her six siblings, by her husband of almost 70 years, Harold Steely, and by two of her children, Brian Steely and Gail Steely.  She is survived by five of her children: Douglas Steely and his spouse Palma Bickford, of Marblehead, MA; Lois Leber and her spouse Peter Leber, of Manchester, CT; Wayne Steely and his spouse Lani Bortfeld, of Enfield, CT; Craig Steely and his spouse Jenn Borealo, of Chester, NJ; and Kathy Ponte and her partner, Steve Cromwell, of Amston Lake, as well as seven grandchildren: Erin Steely, Daniel Ponte and his wife Melanie (Price), Christopher Ponte, Rachel Bortfeld Steely, Ruth Steely, Megan Steely and Emily Steely, and two great-grandchildren, Mariella Ponte and Serafina Ponte, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Anna married the love of her life, Harold, on March 23, 1950.  Together they raised seven children, enjoyed playing pinochle with friends, were members of North United Methodist Church in Manchester, CT, danced at weddings, enjoyed his country music and her “Hupaj-Siupaj” polka music, were diehard Yankee fans, went through lean times, and in better times enjoyed their weeks on Emerald Isle, NC.  Harold’s death on November 26, 2019, dampened her cheerful nature, but eventually she found joy again in the company of her loving friends and family.

Anna worked as a cafeteria worker in Manchester once her children were in school. After moving to New Jersey, Anna worked for many years as a nurses’ aide in the Milford Manor nursing home, and as a private home health care aide.  She was an excellent crafter, whether doing needlework, knitting or braiding rugs, and enjoyed going to tag sales and auctions with Harold and Brian to search for items to sell at flea markets.  She also loved her garden and watching the birds that visited it.  Above all, she was “everybody’s Mom”, beloved by family, neighbors, friends, and friends of her children for her warmth, gentleness and acceptance of others.
