With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Mrs. Bamma Lee Garvin, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and cherished member of our community. Born in Thomasville, Georgia, Bamma was the daughter of hardworking farmers and one of fourteen siblings. From an early age, she played a pivotal role in shaping the futures of her younger brothers and sisters, all while nurturing her own passion for poetry and recitation in the Thomas County school system.
A trailblazer in her family, Bamma attended Knoxville College, becoming the first to pursue higher education. Her journey then led her to Springfield, Massachusetts, where she met and married her devoted husband, George Garvin Jr. Together, they shared 54 years of love and partnership. Bamma devoted much of her life to serving her community, contributing her talents to Spalding, A&P Bakery, and Springfield’s original City Cleaners. But her most cherished role was that of a mother to her two children.
Bamma’s Mahalia-like voice, a gift from God, resonated throughout Massachusetts and Connecticut, known for its ability to uplift and inspire. She was a soulful soloist, choir member, and a dynamic church play director, touching lives with her spiritual gifts. Her musical contributions were only surpassed by her dedication to her faith and her family.
A master of many crafts, Bamma found joy in life’s simple pleasures – fishing, sewing, gardening, and preparing meals that delighted her family and friends. Her life was a testament to the true essence of mission and religion, embodying the values of love, care, and unwavering support.
Bamma leaves behind her loving children, Adrian Eric Garvin and Sonya Faye Garvin, her treasured granddaughters, Nicole Marie Taylor and Jazmyn Aaleyah Garvin, in laws, Madlin Drayton of Summerville, SC, Carolyn Garvin of Springfield, MA, Thelma Garvin of Pineland, SC, Leroy Garvin of Pineland, SC, a host of nieces, nephews, and other dear relatives. Her legacy of faith, love, and dedication will continue to inspire those who knew her.
As we say goodbye to a remarkable woman, we celebrate the life of Mrs. Bamma Lee Garvin – a beacon of grace and strength whose spirit will forever be cherished.
The calling hour is 10-11 a.m. Friday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 33 Oak Street, Springfield, MA, followed by funeral services at 11 a.m., with burial in Oak Grove Cemetery.
