Clayton R. Johnson, 87, of Springfield, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 18, 2026. Born on July 4, 1938, he was predeceased by his mother, Ida Jones Canty, his grandfather, Randolph Johnson, and his stepfather, Thomas Lee Canty Sr.—each of whom played a meaningful role in shaping the hardworking, resourceful man he became. Their influence remained with him throughout his life.
Clayton grew into a man defined by faith, determination, responsibility, and a deep commitment to providing for his family. He believed in doing whatever needed to be done to ensure his children had opportunities he never had himself. Known affectionately as “Mister Do-It-Yourself,” he could fix almost anything, build what was needed, and solve problems with creativity and persistence. His hands were rarely still, and his efforts were always rooted in love.
A proud 33° Prince Hall Mason, Clayton found fellowship, purpose, and community within the brotherhood. His involvement with Sumner Lodge #5 was an important part of his life—not because of titles or recognition, but because he believed deeply in the values of service, integrity, and uplifting others. He carried those principles into his daily life, offering help where it was needed and standing as a steady presence for friends, neighbors, and fellow brothers.
Clayton shared 67 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Roberta Bright Johnson, his high school sweetheart and lifelong partner. Roberta, a dedicated member of the Order of the Eastern Star and Past Worthy Grand Matron, stood beside him through every chapter of their lives. Their bond began in their teenage years and grew into a steadfast union grounded in devotion, respect, and shared purpose. Together they built a life centered on family, hard work, and commitment to one another.
He leaves behind his daughter, Deatrice Johnson, and his sons, Edgar Johnson and Jeffrey Johnson, who carry forward his work ethic, resilience, and quiet wisdom. He was a proud grandfather to eight grandchildren and a joyful presence in the lives of his many great-grandchildren. He is reunited in peace with his daughter, Sheila Denise White, whose memory remained close to his heart. He is also survived by his brothers, Thomas Canty, Jr. and Prince Canty, and his sister, Rosalyn Ali. He is preceded in death by his sister Carolyn Rodriguez.
Clayton will be remembered for his steady presence, and the countless ways he uplifted others simply by showing up and doing the work. His legacy lives on in the family he supported, the opportunities he created, and the many lives he touched with his quiet strength.
The calling hour is 10-11 a.m. Saturday, January 24, at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 45 Buckingham St., Springfield, MA, followed by funeral services at 11 a.m.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude for the prayers, support, and kindness shown during this time. In honor of Clayton’s generous spirit, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
