Elizabeth Esther (Nunnally) James departed this life on July 28, 2025, at home with family. She was born on August 24, 1926, in Springfield, Massachusetts to Paul Nunnally and Annie Mae (Ward) Nunnally.
Elizabeth was educated in the Springfield Public School System, graduating from the former Springfield Technical High School.
Elizabeth was employed by Springfield Public Schools as a bus monitor. She enjoyed greeting and interacting with students every morning and afternoon; as well as the students appreciating her presence on the bus every day. She was also employed by Buxton’s as a leather worker. She enjoyed and took pride in producing top leather goods and forming life-long friendships.
Elizabeth was a life-long member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church. At the time of her passing, she was the oldest living member of Mt. Calvary. Sister James served on the following ministries: Senior Usher Board, Baptist Progressive Women, and Love-In Action. She was a Founding Member of the Culinary Angels. As the oldest member of Mt. Calvary, she was baptized under the founder, Silas Dupree. Elizabeth was also the spokesperson for the Mt. Calvary documentary “Long Hast Thou Stood” which aired on NPR.
Elizabeth was an avid fan of soap operas and westerns. Some of her favorite shows included “Family Feud”, “Law and Order”, and “Blue Bloods”. She loved to do crossword puzzles and word searches, listen to gospel music, reading romance novels, cooking for any occasion, and spending time with her children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. She also loved to sit on her front porch enjoying the sights and sounds of the neighborhood.
Elizabeth is pre-deceased by husband David Sr., son Daivd Jr., grandson David Rodney, brother Joseph Nunnally, and sister O’Dessa Nunnally. She is survived by brother Siford Nunnally Sr., daughters Marcia, Joyce, Barbara, Donna, and Karen; and son Joseph; daughters-in-law Yolanda and Cynthia; granddaughter-in-law Chidiogo, and son-in-law David. She also leaves grandchildren Ashley, Marcus, Christopher, Nicholas, and Zachary; great-grandchildren Maianjel, Davell, Christopher Jr., and Joshua; along with a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The calling hour is 10-11 a.m. Friday at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, followed by funeral services at 11, with burial in Oak Grove Cemetery.
