Evelyn was an active young lady at Commerce High School.  She was a library assistant, on the Junior Executive Board, an audio-visual aid, and on the Assembly Committee, Pep Squad, Homeroom Vice President, and Education Leaders.  Evelyn played various sports, field hockey, basketball, volleyball, badminton, roller skating, tennis, and bowling.  Her hobby was sewing.  She graduated with a focus on Clerical.

In August of 1957, Evelyn married the love of her life, Wendell “Jack” Sigsmund Mitchell and the couple had five children, Edith Vivian Mitchell Ortiz, Wendell S. Mitchell, Jr., Theresa Ann Mitchell Dudley, Florence Mitchell-Brown, and Dorothy Francis Mitchell.  Evelyn and Jack and traveled around the world while he was in the Army, stationed in New Jersey, Taiwan, Florida, and Hampton, Virginia.  They eventually returned to Springfield to raise the family.

Her cousin Priscilla, Garland and their children and the family of Catherine Peace Patterson from Washington DC and their children remember the smiles and joy Evelyn brought into a room.
