George Murchison passed away peacefully on May 25, 2024. Born to the late Amos Murchison and Lurine (McCall) Murchison in Lillington, NC, George lived in Durham, NC, Newport News, VA, Brooklyn, NY, Scottsdale, AZ, Atlanta, GA and Springfield, MA.
As a young man, George enlisted in the US Navy. After being honorably discharged, he moved to Springfield, MA, and worked for many years at Spartan Brake and Muffler. He would later open a nightclub called the New Yorker once on Thompson Street in Springfield. In the late 70’s, George moved to Arizona where he opened George’s Honda.
George also known as “Buck” had a passion for repairing cars. Not only was he a master mechanic, but he loved to race cars at the old Riverside Park. George was a Mason who served as warden in St. Luke’s Lodge of Masons No. 17. He enjoyed socializing with family and friends.
George was predeceased by his wife M. Jewel (Williams) Murchison, son Barry Rattley, and 12 siblings.
He leaves to mourn his passing, his twin sister Ida Byrd of South Carolina and his baby sister Mary Owens of Springfield, MA along with his 11 children, Teresa Peacock (Rasheed), Michael Crews (Nadine), Cheryl Phillips (Sean), George D. Murchison (Germaine), Keith A. Murchison Sr. (Wanda), Leavyel Rattley, Dr. Stephanie Murchison-Brown, Remy Watson (Gloria), Cosima Barrett, Precious Gittens (James), and Kasey Herndon.
George had many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Also, he truly had love for his nephews Lee Murchison and James McNeil along with Dino Barrett who was like a son. Nieces, nephews, cousins. other family and friends will deeply miss George.
The wake will be on June 15, 2024, from 10am -12pm at Macedonia Church Of God In Christ, 215 Tinkham Road, Springfield, MA. On June 20, 2024, at 10am, he will be interred at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Agawam, MA.
