James Vernon Guy, 55, of 950 Avenue H, Norfolk, Virginia, departed this life on Thursday, December 19, 2024.
Born in Springfield on March 25, 1969, he was a son of Willie James Guy and Ernestine (Williams) Guy. He was a member of Gethsemane Church of Jesus Christ. After graduating from the former Springfield Classical High School in 1987, James joined the United States Navy, where he served as the Commanding Officer’s personal barber as a Seaman Recruit. He participated in NEO operations off the coast of South Africa, advanced to SH3, served overseas at the Defense Commissary in Spain, and supported embassies in Europe during Desert Storm. He also served aboard the USS John F. Kennedy (CV67), received his first Naval and Marine Corp Achievement Medal as a Third Class Petty Officer, and served aboard the USS Seattle (AOE 3) with deployment in the Arabian Gulf. He was assigned as a contracting officer for the Naval Ambulatory Care Center in Connecticut, receiving his second Navy and Marine Corp Achievement Medal. James studied leadership and administration and retired from the Navy in 2007.
Besides his parents, he is survived by three brothers, Allan Dwayne Guy, Phillip Lee Guy, and Jason Germaine Guy; a sister, Christina Elizabeth Guy; and a host of other relatives and friends.
The calling hour is 10-11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 14, 2024, at Gethsemane Church of Jesus Christ, 47 Harvey Street, Springfield, Massachusetts, followed by funeral services at 11 a.m.
