Leon Houston Jr., 82, of Springfield, Massachusetts passed away on Saturday, March 21, 2026.
Born in Springfield, he was a son of the late Leon and Della Mae (Wilson) Houston. Leon was a graduate of the former Springfield Technical High School and a member of Cornerstone Church. He retired from Baystate Health Systems as a chef after 50 years of service. Leon also worked for the Springfield Park and Recreation Department. Mr. Houston helped form the Springfield Softball League and served in various capacities, including coach, manager, official, and umpire for the Park and Recreation Dept., Triple A Slo-Pitch Softball, and the Double LL's Basketball and Softball teams. He also volunteered at the Springfield Boys Club.
He is survived by his wife of more than 48 years, Gloria J. Houston; a cousin, Harold Wilson; six brothers-in-law; six sisters-in-law; a special nephew, Daniel A. Provost and his children Mattingly, Angelina and Isabella of Ludlow. He was pre-deceased by two sisters, Yvonne (Houston) Johnson and Darlene (Pewee) McCummings. Leon is also survived by many other extended family members and friends too numerous to mention.
The calling hours are Tuesday 6-8 p.m. at Harrell Funeral Home with funeral services at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Cornerstone Church, 15 Kibbee Rd., East Longmeadow. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery.
