Martin Ruffin Steed, 78, of Springfield, Massachusetts, departed this life on Thursday, December 8, 2022. Born in Louisburg, North Carolina, he was the youngest and last surviving of five children of James Steed and Betty (Ruffin) Steed.
Martin had been employed by Western New England University (retiring in 2006), attended St. John’s Congregational Church and was a former member of Boy Scout Troop 35 Committee. Martin was known as the "Man with Plan" and "Mac Daddy". Many from back in the day knew him as Wine, because he loved him some Wild Irish Rose. He was a social butterfly who liked cracking jokes. Everywhere he went he always met a friend for life. That's the type of personality he had. His passion was loving his family. He enjoyed going to the park and hanging out with his nephew, Doug, and friends. He had a collection of hats and watches, but most of all he LOVED his Cadillac and Thunderbird cars. He loved having holiday gatherings with his family and friends. He hosted many birthday parties. He loved dancing and would dance the night away. He would have card games and sports events at his home. He conquered many health issues over the years. No matter how he felt he always kept a smile on his face and fought his battle to the very end.
Pre-deceased by his brother, Henry James Steed; three sisters, Jean Harlow Green, Clara B. Lewis, and Barbara Ann Bobbitt; and his lifelong friend and partner Barbara Hill, he is survived by his daughter, Carsandra Hill-Green (Steed) of Springfield; a son-in-law, Reverend Terry Green Sr.; a granddaughter, Angel Deniese Hill-Green of Springfield; two special nieces, Marilyn Steed and Betty Greene, both of Springfield; and a host of other relatives.
The calling hour is 10-11 a.m. Wednesday, January 11, 2023, at Shiloh Community Pentecostal Church, 91 Jasper St., Springfield, Massachusetts, followed by funeral services at 11 a.m.
