Michael Anthony “Mossy” Depeiza, 71, of Springfield, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones, on Friday, August 22, 2025, at Mercy Medical Center in Springfield.
Michael was born in St. Michael’s “the Baylands,” Barbados, where he was educated in the local schools and graduated from Bayland Primary School. He was employed for many years as a plumber for the National Housing Authority in Barbados.
At the age of 32, Michael moved to Springfield with his late wife, Renia Copeland. He went on to work passionately for 32 years with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, serving as a primary care worker and residential supervisor for the Department of Mental Health. A dedicated provider, Michael also worked a second full-time job as a Direct Care worker at ServiceNet and as a Springfield Public School bus driver.
He was a proud member of the National Rifle Association.
Michael will be forever remembered for his kindness and his willingness to open his heart and home to anyone in need.
He was predeceased by his brother, David Depeiza. Michael leaves behind his loving children, Roger R. Moore, Latoya V. Depeiza, and Dion Moore-Kelley; his former wife, Sonia (Moore) Depeiza; his caring siblings, Edwin Depeiza, Syrlene Depeiza, Trevor Depeiza, Ester Cox, and Joseph Cox; nine cherished grandchildren—Jaylen, Kya, Kayla, Ayden, Noah, Carter, Elijah, and Elise—as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
A memorial service will be held at Macedonia Church of God in Christ, 213 Tinkham Road, Springfield, MA. Saturday, September 13th, 2025, at 11:00 a.m.
