Sharyn Lee Cecilia Thomas, 73, of Springfield, MA, departed this life on Saturday, November 6, 2021. Born in Springfield, she was a daughter of Meta L. (Postell) Thomas and John H. Thomas Sr. Sharyn was a ’66 graduate of Springfield Classical High School. She attended Paier School of Art in Hamden, CT, to study Interior Design, graduated from UMass Amherst with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Printmaking in 1974, and graduated from Springfield College with a Master’s in Education in 1980. She did post graduate study at Springfield College in Art Therapy and also at the Institute of Children’s Literature in Writing for Children.
Sharyn taught in the Springfield Public Schools from 1980 to 2002 and worked as the Children’s Reference Assistant with Springfield City Library, Brightwood Branch, from 1975 to 1978. She also served as Minister of the Eucharist for Holy Name Church and Holy Family Church and at Trinity United Methodist Church, she sang in the choir, played in the Handbell Choir, and performed in Boar’s Head Festivals. Sharyn appeared in the editions of Who’s Who in American Education, in The East, and in the World.
Pre-deceased by her parents and a brother, John Henry Thomas Jr., she is survived by her sister, Lucie K. (Thomas) Lewis; her nieces and nephews, Leona J. Thomas and Heather A. (Thomas) Sagan, and Michael T. C. Lewis; her grandnephews, Carl Welch, Kendall D. Sweeney-Thomas, and Kage J. Sagan; a grandniece, Avalon B. Sagan; two aunts, Helen (Postell) Spence and Mary Jo (Ingram) Postell; an uncle, Joseph E. Postell; a brother-in-law, James E. Lewis; and a multitude of cousins and other relatives.
A memorial service to commemorate her life will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Harrell Funeral Home, 355 St. James Avenue, Springfield.
