Sylvia Jacintho Obituary

It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Sylvia Jane (Gladden) Jacintho, 73, a resident of Springfield, MA.  She passed away peacefully in the comfort of her own home on January 21, 2024.  Sylvia was born on January 12, 1951, and held the esteemed position of being the eldest daughter of the late Caleb Roger Gladden and Elnora Gladden.

After dedicating 40 years of her life to the Springfield Republican Newspaper Company, Sylvia made the decision to retire.  However, she was not one to embrace idleness, so even in her retirement, she took on a part-time position at the deli in Stop & Shop grocery store.  Sylvia’s commitment extended beyond her professional life.  She was a devoted and engaged member of the Wesley United Methodist Church in Springfield, MA.  In fact, she held various important roles within the church community.  Sylvia faithfully served as the Communion Steward, offered her assistance as an usher on the Usher’s Board, and fulfilled the responsibilities of Secretary for the Church Charge Conference and monthly church meeting.  She was also a respected member of the Little Dressed Group, where she dedicated herself to crafting dresses for girls in West Africa.  Additionally, she actively participated in the Loaves and Fishes Ministry, demonstrating her dedication to giving back.  Sylvia’s contribution extended to her role as a valuable member of the Wesley United Methodist Church’s newsletter committee.

Sylvia enjoyed being active in her community, serving as a troop co-leader for the Wesley Girl Scout Troop #245.  She was the Cookie Coordinator for the annual GSA Fundraiser for both the Brownies and Juniors/Senior Girls.  She also held many positions in Boy Scout Troop 35, serving as Troop Secretary for years.  Sylvia made it a point to participate in many adult leadership trainings, including Sampler and Woodbadge courses.  In addition to her church responsibilities and community engagement, Sylvia was an avid gardener, camper, and most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and family.

Sylvia’s passing has left a void in the lives of her loved ones.  We mourn the loss of Sylvia’s brother, Earl “Mitch” Bryant, her brother-in-law, Edward Thadison, and her nephew, Edward “Lil E” Thadison.  Sylvia’s memory as a devoted mother lives on through her children, Ako Jacintho, MD (Jack Douglas) and Joia Jacintho (Michele Campbell), and her former husband and father to her children, Joseph Jacintho.  Sylvia’s legacy continues through her three grandchildren, Emeka Jacintho, Judas Jacintho, and Halla Jacintho.  Let us also remember Sylvia’s loving surviving sibling:  Leroy Williams (Bea), Caleb Gladden (Geraldine), Genevive Hopper (Mack), Karen Gladden-Thadison, and Kevin Gladden.  Numerous nieces and nephews join in honoring Sylvia’s memory.

A memorial service will be held in her honor on Saturday, March 23, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church, 741 State Street, Springfield, MA.
